Welcome to the Fox Valley

          Newcomer Project Community Map!

The data used to create this map was gathered from January-May 2025.
This map shows the organizations and services in the Fox Valley
which support immigrants and refugees as they resettle in the area.

Each sector shows what is available and reflects the perspectives of
        Newcomers as well as organizations.
A "Newcomer" is a person or family who has moved to the Fox Valley or the United States in the past 5-10 years and is learning and adjusting to the main languages and cultures of our region.

Language comfort
This year, we asked our Newcomer respondents to rate their comfort with different domains of language: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. We asked them to rate their comfort levels in both their primary language and in English.
At least 50% of respondents are comfortable in their primary language across all language domains. At least 20% of respondents are comfortable with English across all language domains.
Most respondents said they are comfortable using their primary language, which may suggest strong literacy and education levels in our Newcomer population. This is supported by the fact that two-thirds reported completing education from high school equivalency to doctoral degrees outside the U.S.
English Classes
73% of Newcomer respondents are currently enrolled in English classes.
Among respondents not currently in English classes, about half said they know where to go to learn English, and half said they don’t.
Language and Literacy Services
Compared to 2024, far fewer Newcomer respondents said interpreting and document translation are unmet needs—only 7% this year, compared to 34% last year. This drop may show that the community is becoming more comfortable using these services.
This year, services and support for language learning were identified as the highest requested service by Newcomers in this sector.
